Montréal Heart of the City Piano Program

About Us
Music is an integral factor of academic education, and a wonderful outlet for self-expression and creativity. Learning music at a young age ignites cognitive, social, and emotional development in children; however, many primary schools do not have the resources to supply all of their students with a personalized, hands-on music education. A 2010 survey conducted by Hill Strategies Research reveals that only 10% of all music opportunities offered in Canadian elementary schools involve individual lessons. A more personal, more interactive, one-on-one educational experience is invaluable, especially when it comes to cultivating the skills and comprehension necessary to play and create music. The Montreal Heart of the City Piano Program (MHCPP) is a McGill student club dedicated to making individual lessons more accessible to children. We provide free piano lessons to elementary schools in underprivileged areas who might not have the financial capacity to seek lessons outside of school. Our mission is to cultivate an appreciation for music by working closely with students to introduce them to various musical styles and develop their musicianship. Through weekly lessons, which involve concentrated exercises and practice, students are prepared to perform at our biannual recitals, allowing their teachers and parents to witness first-hand their musical development.
Our volunteer piano teachers are selected from the McGill student body and the greater Montreal area. They dedicate their time and knowledge to structuring and customizing lessons for their assigned students. Their goal is not only to teach piano, but also to build confidence and inspire a love for music. Our program also allows strong connections to blossom between mentor and mentee, providing a rewarding experience for our teachers and an unforgettable learning opportunity for our students that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

What We Do

Activities Night
Activities Night is the day where the staff team recruits and meets new volunteers. It occurs at the beginning of every semester and it is the best place to find out about us and ask questions. Join us and meet the staff team there! Learn more about it on the SSMU instagram.

End-of-Semester Recitals
Recitals are hosted at the end of every teaching semester, right before exam season. Parents, and volunteers alike get together to encourage the students to display what they learned throughout the semester. It is where we celebrate the students’ perseverance and progress throughout the semester, regardless of where they are in their musical journey.
